Hiking Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) in Norway – The Ultimate Guide
(updated February 16, 2022)
Have you dreamed of Hiking Preikestolen in Norway?
Preikestolen or “Pulpit Rock” holds the title of being one of the most spectacular viewing points in the world, and I can vouch for that! Here is everything you need to know about Hiking Preikestolen in Norway.

My Preikestolen Essentials
1. Getting to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock)
There are numerous ways to get to Preikestolen. The most common way is taking the ferry from Stavanger to Tau. Read alternative ways to Preikestolen here.
The ferry from Stavanger to Tau will cost you approximately 60 kroner ($7 USD) and typically run every 40 minutes, however, make sure to check the google timetables as they may change depending on the day and season.
Alternatively, you can also book guided tours that depart from Stavanger where transport is included. Check out this guided tour here.

2. Where to stay
Lodging in Tau will be the closest option to Preikestolen. However, Stavanger is only a 40-minute ferry ride and a short drive.
Lilland Brewery Hotel – A boutique hotel & microbrewery in Tau just 10 minutes from the ferry dock. You can enjoy a pack of locally brewed beer along with a delicious breakfast. This hotel is more centrally located in Tau and is one of the best options if you don’t have a car as the Preikestolen bus tours depart at the ferry dock.
Hotel Victoria – Located in Stavanger, this boutique hotel is right in the heart of the city. Hotel Victoria will give you a taste of luxury Scanadanavia without breaking the bank!

3. Hiking at Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock)
People of all ages and moderate physical activity are able to enjoy hiking Preikestolen. All you need is a light jacket, durable hiking or tennis shoes, a water bottle, snacks, and a camera! It is crowded most of the day, but in the afternoon/early evening is the best time to go, as that’s when all the tourists are leaving.
Tip- google Pulpit Rock Weather before arranging your trip. Odds are, it will be at least drizzling when you go, but you don’t want to go in the pouring rain!
Hiking at Preikestolen was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my time in Norway. If you will be traveling near the south of Norway – you must make this hike at the top of your list! Who knows, maybe you’ll see Tom Cruise hangin’ out? 🙂
